LUMA's Neighborhood Guide

The Mission Bay neighborhood is full of things to do, and no one does it better than LUMA Hotel! Below is a selection of our favorite spots and resources to help you explore the area. Choose your destinations, and let us know your plans: we're more than happy to help you say you've done it all! Mission Bay is home to world-class civic and cultural facilities, including the renowned UCSF Medical Center as well as the spectacular homes of the San Francisco Giants (Oracle Park) and Golden State Warriors (Chase Center). 

Mission Bay is one of the safest neighborhoods in San Francisco, with most improvements having been built within the last 20 years. It features three well-maintained parks situated along Mission Creek, a lovely walking trail along the Creek to the Bay as well as a large dog park within a 40-acre park system. (See More) 

It's served by the brand new Central Subway, via the Mission Rock Station, which runs through the neighborhood and connects it seamlessly to the Convention Center, Union Square, and Chinatown. LUMA Hotel San Francisco is just an easy walk to the Caltrain station providing access from San Francisco down the peninsula to Gilroy.

Transportation

LUMA has convenient access to a number of SFMTA transit lines, providing easy transportation to the rest of San Francisco. The new T Line's Central Subway (departs right in front of our doors), provides a brand new option to take riders straight through downtown and all the way to Chinatown. The CalTrain Station is a 5 minute walk from LUMA, connecting riders with business hubs throughout the Peninsula & South Bay. If you're looking to travel by boat, LUMA can also connect you with the SF Bay Ferry

Oracle Park, Home of the San Francisco Giants

A fixture of the Bay Area, Oracle Park is one of the most unique baseball parks in the country. Home of the San Francisco Giants, the park famously sits along the San Francisco Bay, with boats regularly floated around in ‘McCovey Cove’ hoping to fish a home run ball out of the water. LUMA Hotel is steps away, with views inside the park and special game day offers  - we are baseball fans' ideal location.

Chase Center, Home of the Golden State Warriors

The state-of-the-art Chase Center, home of the Golden State Warriors and world-class concerts, is conveniently located along Mission Bay's waterfront. Thrive Center, the adjacent community gathering space, is a beautiful open-air district offering year-round amenities for families, fans & visitors, including festivals, farmers markets, dining experiences, and community events. Don't miss local favorites Gott’s Roadside, Dumpling Time, Harmonic Brewing, Philz Coffee and Tyler Florence’s newest dining destination, Miller & Lux.

Mission Bay Dining

Mission Bay dining continues the trend of memorable San Francisco dining! Visit any number of our neighboring eateries, breweries, food trucks, and coffee shops to get a taste! Spark Social is a vibrant permanent food truck gathering space, offering fun fusion and international fare. New Belgium Taproom serves a world-class beer menu and globally inspired cuisine.

UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital

UCSF's Medical Centers are consistently ranked among the nation's best children's hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. With hundreds of doctors from more than 50 medical specialties, the hospitals cover virtually all pediatric conditions, including cancer, heart disease, neurological disorders and traumatic injuries, as well as expertise in organ transplants and the care of critically ill newborns. Each year, tens of thousands of children come to UCSF from all over the U.S. and the world for treatment.

Mission Bay Parks

Mission Bay is full of green spaces! Mission Creek Park is an idyllic tree-lined park lining Mission Creek with areas for relaxing, Channel Street Dog Park where the pooches roam, and Mission Bay Kids Park, a one-of-a-kind park that’s centered around water, exploration, and discovery. Upon completion, the Mission Bay Parks system will include 40 acres of planned open space.

Stagecoach Greens Mini Golf

The City’s only outdoor mini golf course is a unique way to preview all of SF's sights, learn its unique history and experience SF culture and locals-only humor. Participate in the story of Boom & Bust in the West and the brave people who came here seeking gold. This one-of-a-kind 18-hole course was created by 150+ local artists, each bringing their own talents and points of view in support of a single vision and story. Don't miss the SF-themed selfie opportunities to capture the moment!

Mission Bay Creek and Waterfront

The Mission Creek boat launch is located in Mission Creek Park, around the corner from LUMA Hotel. The area gives paddlers a chance to enjoy the protected waters of Mission Creek, paddle to the nearby McCovey Cove outside the San Francisco Giant’s ballpark, or rest and picnic in the park as they tour the San Francisco waterfront.

SpinOut Fitness

SpinOut is the West Coast's only Waterbike Fitness and Experience Center. Whether you are visiting for 1 day or for 1 month, they have a program for everyone. Their 90-minute Scenic Ride is a great way to start your new favorite obsession and a fun way to see the Bay in a whole new way.

Salesforce Park & Transit Center

Salesforce Tower changed the San Francisco skyline; its silhouette can't be missed! Beneath it, the new, multi-story San Francisco transit center is a landmark that transforms a commuter hub into an urban destination. With interiors open to the light, it’s a sociable, open space for people to gather, topped by a breathtaking leafy park where the sky is the roof.

Moscone Center

San Francisco's premier meeting and exhibition facility is situated on two adjacent 11-acre blocks bounded by Mission, Folsom, 3rd and 4th Streets. The center is within convenient walking distance of many businesses, transit centers, and hotels - including LUMA! It completed a 4 year, $551-million expansion project in 2019.

San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA)

The 170,000 sq ft San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is one of the largest museums of modern and contemporary art in the United States and a thriving cultural center for the Bay Area. Our remarkable collection of painting, sculpture, photography, architecture, design, and media arts, is housed in a LEED Gold-certified building designed by the global architects Snøhetta and Mario Botta. In addition to seven gallery floors, SFMOMA offers 45,000 square feet of free, art-filled public space open to all.

Catch the #15 North Train at Mission Rock Station - 18-minute ride

SF Embarcadero

Comprised of the eastern waterfront along the San Francisco Bay, it begins at 2nd and King Streets near Oracle Park, passes under the Bay Bridge, and continues north passing the famous Cupid's Span sculpture, Ferry Building, the Exploratorium Museum, Pier 39, and Fisherman's Wharf, ending at Pier 45.

Ferry Building

One of San Francisco’s most famous landmarks, this world-class public food market creates an indoor street within the historic Ferry Building. Located at the foot of Market Street on the waterfront, with its dramatic clock tower, the market is an SF icon. Bring your appetite!

Dogpatch Paddle

Paddling the San Francisco Bay is an epic outdoor adventure. Dogpatch Paddle offers paddle board and kayak rentals and lessons from the calm waters of Crane Cove Park, just a few minutes south of LUMA. They have everything you need for an adventure on the Bay. Guides can teach newcomers the basics or help experienced paddlers refine their techniques to build confidence and safety. Once on the Bay, expect to encounter stunning views of the city and wildlife, including seals, sea lions, cormorants, giant herons, pelicans & more.
